There have been 19 fires in the province since Monday. There are currently 53 active fires burning in the province. Total fires this year now stand at 674. The 20-year average as of this date is 281 fires.
Fire dangers in the Eastern, Interlake, Western and Northwestern Regions are low to moderate, however, the Island Lake area of the Northeast Region continues to experience high to extreme fire danger levels. Significant lightning activity continues to generate new fire starts. Fire suppression strategies within this limited action zone concentrate on value protection (Life, Property) as opposed to all-out extinguishment. Consequently several larger sustained action fires have developed.
A 60 hectare fire in the Willow Lake area, southeast of Island Lake has reached approximately 60,000 ha. in size. Additionally, three other fires in the 15-20 ha. range also continue to burn. While none of these fires constitute a threat to any community at this time, they are generating significant smoke that can (depending on wind spread and direction) impact several communities such as Waasagamach, St. Theresa Point, Garden Hill, Red Sucker Lake and God's Narrows which are northeast of the fires.
While significant fire suppression activity is under way, extreme drought-like conditions and resulting extreme fire behaviour on windy days will continue to hamper extinguishment for some time. Significant rainfall in the area forecast for Monday would improve this situation greatly.
