Lightning started a total of 13 new wildfires yesterday. Wildfire crews are working to contain these fires as well as wildfires from previous days. The Snow Lake, Cranberry Portage and Sherridon areas are experiencing the bulk of these new wildfire starts. Wildfire crews and heavy equipment continue suppression work to protect timber from larger wildfires in the Davidson Lake, Moose Lake and areas. Wildfire crews and equipment also continue firefighting efforts on larger wildfires near Landing Lake and east of Lake Winnipegosis. 42 firefighters from Quebec and 27 firefighters from Wisconsin continue to assist our crews in their firefighting efforts. Lightning is igniting new wildfires throughout the forested areas of Manitoba. This is expected to continue until significant precipitation occurs throughout these areas.

Due to the dry conditions and high forest fire danger level in northwestern Manitoba, all burning permits have been cancelled and a fire ban has been implemented for all fires, including campfires in provincial parks. Fires will only be allowed in approved pits and will be limited to the hours between 8 pm and 8 am. Propane and gas appliances are approved for use. No fireworks permits will be issued. Please see the wildfire restrictions page for further information at https://www.gov.mb.ca/wildfire

Please exercise caution when in or near forested areas. If using an ATV, please remember to stay on developed trails, stop frequently to check areas around the engine and exhaust for debris and carefully dispose of any debris found. A small shovel, axe, and fire extinguisher should be carried with your ATV at all times.

Open fires are prohibited from April 1 to November 15 annually, except under a burning permit or in enclosed, approved fire pits such as grated campfire pits in provincial campsites. Activities in wooded areas involving fireworks or sky lanterns may also require written authorization during this time period in certain areas.

For information on required authorization or permits, please contact your local Conservation and Water Stewardship office. Municipalities often implement their own restrictions. Please check with your local Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship district offices and local municipal offices for information on burning bans or other restrictions.
