School-Based Child Care Centre Expansion Project

Manitoba’s Action Plan under the Canada-Manitoba Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement provides capital funding for the development and expansion of child care centres in schools and on school property to increase access to licensed child care across the province.

In 2023, Manitoba opened applications for public school divisions to apply for funding for the development of new child care spaces on surplus land or in surplus building space. These projects will build on the success of Manitoba’s Child Care in Schools Policy that aims to include a purpose-built child care centre in the design of all new schools and schools undergoing major renovation. Co-locating child care on school property supports families whose children are enrolled in that school and strengthens ties between schools and communities.

Manitoba has announced the creation of more than 2,600 spaces for children under seven across 42 public schools. Over 500 school-age spaces will be developed in shared spaces to provide before and after school care through non-capital, provincial funding.
