Rent Assist Estimator for Manitobans not on Employment and Income Assistance

Rent Assist is a monthly shelter-related financial benefit to help low-income Manitobans who pay rent in the private market and who are required to spend a large portion of their income on rent. Rent Assist helps Manitobans pay an affordable rent, which has been set at 80% of Median Market Rent according to household size. The Median Market Rent is established by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and reflects the midpoint between the highest and lowest amount of rent that all households actually pay.

Manitobans who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and not on Employment and Income Assistance (EIA) benefits and who are living in eligible rental or board and room arrangements may be eligible for Rent Assist benefits.

Manitobans may not apply for Rent Assist if:

  • they rent their home from Manitoba Housing
  • they, or the unit they live in, gets any other kind of housing benefit or subsidy
  • they live on a First Nations reserve
  • they live in a nursing home, hospital or residential care facility
  • they live in student housing

How much Rent Assist can I get?

Benefits are calculated based on the difference between 80% of Median Market Rent and 30% of net household income. The Rent Assist Estimator can help households see if they may have eligibility for Rent Assist.

The Estimator cannot be used to calculate eligibility for Rent Assist for Manitobans on EIA. Information on Rent Assist for EIA participants can be found here.

Please fill in the following information and we will estimate your monthly Rent Assist benefit:

Are you or your spouse or any other adult in your household receiving Employment and Income Assistance (EIA) benefits?
Are you or anyone else in the household 55 years of age or older?
Did you or anyone else in the household claim the Disability Tax credit or receive Canada Pension Plan Disability (CPPD) benefits in the previous tax year?

The calculation is just an estimate based only on the information you provided. When you apply for Rent Assist, the information on your application and your income verification will be used to calculate your actual benefit.
If you received Old Age Security benefits or are new to Canada, please contact Provincial Services as the income used to determine benefits is calculated differently.
