Department of Families’ Intellectual Disability Issues Advisory Council 


Overview:

The Intellectual Disability Issues Advisory (IDIA) Council addresses the recommendation of the Vulnerable Persons Task Force that an advisory council be created. The task force recommended that the council should oversee the progress Manitoba Families makes on a range of intellectual disability issues affecting adult Manitobans.

With membership from community stakeholders, the council will provide community-informed advice and assistance to the minister of families, related to the review, development and implementation of programs and services for adults with an intellectual disability.

The Council

The council will be composed of the following members:

  • assistant deputy minister of Corporate Services (Families) (Chair)
  • a representative from service delivery organizations
  • a representative from disability advocacy organizations
  • a representative from families of people with an intellectual disability
  • two representatives of self-advocates, of which at least one must be an adult with an intellectual disability
  • a representative of Indigenous stakeholders

Community members will be appointed by the minister for a maximum term of two years, starting on Nov. 1, 2022.  

Who Should Apply?

The minister is inviting nominations for council membership from community stakeholders such as service delivery organizations, disability advocacy organizations, families of people with an intellectual disability, self-advocates and Indigenous stakeholders.
Nominees should:

  • be residents of Manitoba
  • be aged 18 years or older
  • have interest and experience related to advocacy or services for adults with an intellectual disability
  • not be a current employee of the Manitoba government
