DESCRIPTION OF
DEPOSIT
The quarry is situated immediately north of the Archean Falcon Lake
greenstone belt. A massive 40-60 foot wide pink porphyritic Archean granodiorite
body with very irregular texture has intruded into a sheared gneissic dark grey
granite with uniform grain size. The large, two-inch, phenocrysts of microcline
in the granodiorite exhibit a delicate pearly play of light when polished. Both
rock types have few joints.

HISTORY OF
EXPLORATION AND DEVELOPMENT
The quarry is located approximately 79 miles east of Winnipeg about 1
mile east of the village of East Braintree and 700 yards north of the Greater
Winnipeg Water District Railway.
The early history of the deposit is
uncertain but it is believed that the name “Pipe Line” Granite was applied to it
in 1916 because of its proximity to the aqueduct which joins Shoal Lake and
Winnipeg. An analysis of the “Pipe Line” Granite indicated

In 1921 the Brookeville Granite
Quarries, Limited was formed to develop the deposit and a prospectus was issued.
“The quarry equipment consisted of engines with houses over same; derricks,
erected for handling huge granite blocks; power house, 38 by 28 feet, containing
two engines, two air compressors and air tanks in first class working order;
workshop, 100 by 35 feet, polishing machine; bunkhouses, and office building”.
R. C. Wallace reported that no shipments were made from the quarry during
1925-1927; however, previous to that pink granodiorite was marketed as “St.
Cloud Red” and the grey granite as “St. Cloud Grey”.
The history of the
property from 1928-1954 is unknown, but in 1946 Cold Spring Granite Company *
showed some interest in the property.
In 1955 Margaret E. Watson took out a
10-year lease M-190 on the property, 21.07 acres, and a year later assigned it
to David Elias. The property was restaked as Q.C. W575 in 1961 and no work was
done. In 1963 R. Lagrou restaked the property as Q.C. W957 and in 1964 assigned
it to McMunn Granite Co. Ltd. Stone was removed from the property from
1964-1967. I. Friesen restaked the property as Q.C. W1727 in 1970 and in 1973
the permit was cancelled.
