Prevention Orders

In Manitoba, The Domestic Violence and Stalking Act provides legal measures that can help protect you from domestic violence and stalking. A Prevention Order is one of these tools that can impose conditions on the person subjecting you to domestic violence or stalking.

What is the difference between a prevention order and a protection order?

Conditions of a prevention order can be very similar to those of a protection order. However, because prevention orders are made by a judge of the Court of King’s Bench, more conditions can be imposed on the respondent.

Unlike protection order applications, prevention order applications are best completed with the help of a lawyer, and can involve other legal costs such as filing fees. A lawyer can help you file the documents and present your evidence in court. The respondent will also be able to hire a lawyer and present their own evidence in court.
