Funding for Recreation In Your Community

There are many avenues for funding for recreation in your community.  Funding is available for a wide range of activities from providing qualified recreation leadership, building or improving facilities to putting plans in place for community projects and programs. Provincial Recreation Organizations

The Province provides recreation operating grants to provincial organizations who offer diverse types of programs and services that support Manitoba’s recreation delivery system.  These include:


Provincial Government Funding Opportunities

A number of government programs provide funding opportunities for recreation.  These include:

Community Youth Recreation

This program is intended to support projects that increase the amount of recreation opportunities available to youth across Neighbourhood Alive! communities outside of Winnipeg.

Recreation Opportunities Program – Partners in Leisure (ROP)

Encourages municipal corporations and school divisions to form a partnership aimed at providing a wide range of community recreation opportunities through qualified recreation leadership. For further information, please contact your Recreation and Regional Services office.

Neighbourhoods Alive

Provides support to community organizations for neighbourhood revitalization including the Community Initiatives program

Northern Youth Empowerment Initiative

Supports and facilitates the development of policies and programs that promote improved health outcomes for northern and Aboriginal communities including community recreation and wellness programming.

Community Places

Provides funding and planning assistance to non-profit community organizations for facility construction, upgrading, expansion or acquisition. Eligible projects are those which provide sustainable recreation and wellness benefits to communities.


Provides funding support to provide youth with positive community based social and recreation activities including sports and arts in the after school time period at schools, community facilities and recreation centres.


Provides funding support to community organizations in the following areas:  Arts and Culture, Community Festivals, Public Libraries and Multiculturalism


Provides support to identify, protect and interpret Manitoba’s heritage resources.

Home Town Green Teams

Creates summer employment opportunities for students and youth aged 16 to 24 years. Participating employers provide a variety of community development projects that improve neighbourhoods, promote community involvement and help develop young leaders.

Partners in Recreation – other funding opportunities

Sport Manitoba

Offers a wide range of developmental grants that facilitate the growth of athletes, coaches and officials at the community level

Kids Sport

Provides financial assistance for registration fees and equipment for children and youth ages 18 and under.


Provides financial assistance for registration fees, equipment or transportation for children and youth ages 4-18.

Community Services Council

Allocates funds and/or bingo events to non profit, volunteer community service, social service, recreation, and health-related organizations in Manitoba. 

Manitoba Arts Council

Provides grants to arts organizations and individuals.

Regional Health Authorities

RHA’s may have special funds to support healthy living initiatives including physical activity, healthy eating, smoking reduction and injury prevention.  Contact your local RHA for more details.
