Back to Watershed Districts

Westlake Watershed District is located along the western shores of Lake Manitoba and encompasses an area of approximately 4,450 kmĀ². Established in 1978 as the Alonsa Conservation District, the district transitioned to the Westlake Watershed District through proclamation of the Watershed Districts Act on January 1, 2020. The district was established to manage issues pertaining to agricultural drainage in the municipalities of Alonsa and Lawerence, and operates and maintains approximately 840 km of agricultural drains and their associated crossing infrastructure. Programming within the district include drain maintenance, crossing repair and replacement, forage seed assistance, wildlife habitat enhancement, tree planting, preservation of spiritual, ceremonial and teaching sites, sealing abandoned wells, pasture management, and watershed management extension. The district completed the Westlake integrated watershed management plan in 2014.
