Selkirk Mental Health Centre is located in the City of Selkirk, a 20-minute drive north of
Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Centre's surroundings are a park-like campus on the outskirts of
the city, providing a safe and pleasant atmosphere for a caring, hopeful, empowering
facility that assures recovery for patients.
The
Centre has the mandate of providing long term mental health
inpatient treatment and rehabilitation services to all residents of
Manitoba whose challenging treatment and rehabilitation needs cannot
be met by other services. It provides short term
and acute inpatient mental health services to Manitoba residents of
the Interlake, North Eastman, South Eastman, Burntwood, Norman and
Churchill Regions.
The Centre also has an agreement with the Government of
Nunavut to provide inpatient services to Nunavut residents
experiencing mental illness.
In
1994, Selkirk Mental Health Centre
implemented a
Program Management Model for the provision of inpatient psychiatric
treatment and care. Treatment services in all programs are
provided by multi-discipline treatment teams, consisting of
psychiatrists, general practitioners, psychologists, social workers,
occupational therapists, registered psychiatric nurses, registered nurses,
licensed practical nurses, recreational
therapists, pharmacists, the Chaplain, the Aboriginal Elder and
Aboriginal Friendship Workers.
As an Accredited Psychiatric Hospital with 261 inpatient beds and
8 community residence beds, Selkirk Mental
Health Centre functions under the applicable provisions of The
Mental Health Act of Manitoba as an operating unit of
Manitoba Health.
