Falls Prevention Week for Older Adults
We All Have a Role to Play
November 6 – 12th, 2017

November 6 – 12th, 2017 is the sixth annual proclamation of the Fall Prevention Week for Older Adults in Manitoba. The goal of the Fall Prevention Week for Older Adults is to raise the awareness on the importance of preventing falls and reducing injuries due to falls among older adults and to encourage leadership and collaboration among falls prevention stakeholders and health authorities across the province.

The key messages for Falls Prevention include:

  • Increase physical activity and muscle strength
  • Improve mobility and balance
  • Take a Vitamin D supplement
  • Choose a supportive and safe footwear
  • Have regular vision check-ups and correct vision problems
  • Review all medications with a doctor or pharmacist
  • Reduce trip and slip hazards in the home or outdoors

Why is Injury Prevention Important?

The burden of injury in Manitoba is profound.  Injuries are the most frequent cause of death for Manitobans between the ages of one and 44.  Deaths resulting from injuries can devastate families and communities.  Serious injuries resulting in permanent impairments may lead to loss of employment and significant costs associated with care and rehabilitation. 

In 2010 injuries in Manitoba resulted in:

  • 725 people dying; that is almost two per day.
  • 185 individuals becoming totally disabled.
  • 2,278 people becoming partially disabled.
  • 10,044 hospitalizations.
  • 127,543 visits to the emergency room.

While the human suffering caused by injury cannot be fully measured, the financial costs are astronomical and create a major strain on our health care system.   In 2010, injuries cost Manitoba $1.2 billion; or $958 per Manitoban.  Almost half of these injuries were due to falls (30%) and transport Incidents (16%). The good news is, most injuries can be prevented with the right knowledge, skills and equipment.  In fact, it is estimated that more than 90% of injuries are predictable and preventable.  Assess the risks of each situation, sport or job; taking safety or skills training when needed; and always wearing the right gear. Making smart choices about daily activities will help keep you and your family safe and healthy.

Injury Prevention Plan: Taking Steps to Prevent Injuries in ManitobaIn 2006, the Manitoba Injury Prevention Strategy PDF was introduced.  In 2015, to renew focus on injury prevention in Manitoba and build on the achievements and progress made since the introduction of the 2006 Strategy, Manitoba Health, Healthy Living and Seniors developed the five-year Injury Prevention Plan: Taking Steps to Prevent Injuries in Manitoba.PDF

The overall goals of the plan are to:

  1. Reduce the risk of injury
  2. Reduce societal costs of injury
  3. Change attitudes and behaviours
