Manitoba Indian Residential Schools

There were 18 Indian Residential Schools in operation in Manitoba between 1886 and 1988, 14 of which are officially recognized by the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement (IRSSA); meaning, these 14 schools were funded and operated in whole by the federal government or in part by the federal government and a religious order.

Please note that there were a number of other schools that were funded by the provincial government and/or a religious order that are not included in the IRSSA.

Communities in Manitoba are working to document the children who attended these schools, but incomplete records make it difficult to determine a definitive number. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada determined that at least 338 children who attended Indian Residential Schools in Manitoba died while attending, or within a year of being discharged. This number is expected to increase as investigations continue.
