Steps to Submit a Complaint to the Consumer Protection Office

If you believe you were charged unlawful fees by a payday lender, you have the right to submit a complaint to the Consumer Protection Office. If you choose to submit a complaint, it must be in writing and include as much of the following information as possible:

  1. A brief description/summary of your complaint.
  2. A statement asking our office to investigate your complaint and review your information to determine whether you were overcharged.
  3. Your contact information including your full name, date of birth, mailing address, email address and phone number where you can be reached during the day.
  4. Your previous address if it has changed since your loan was obtained.
  5. The business location where your loan was obtained.
  6. The date or approximate date your loan was taken out. Please note that the law regarding maximum fees a payday lender may charge came into effect on October 18th 2010. The legislation applies to loans entered into after that date.
  7. The method the loan proceeds were advanced to you (e.g. by cash, cash card, cheque, electronic funds transfer, etc).
  8. A photocopy or scan of the payday loan agreement (contract), any receipts you were given by the business and any other documents or information that you believe are relevant to your complaint. If you do not have a copy of your loan documents please state this in writing.
  9. Sign and date your complaint submission acknowledging that the information is true and accurate to the best of your knowledge and that you understand and agree that the information regarding your complaint will be shared with the business, as well as with other persons or businesses that the Consumer Protection Office feels necessary in order to attempt to resolve your complaint.

Your written complaint may be submitted by attending our office, by regular letter, by email, or by fax.
