About STEM

Manitoba is the place where innovation flourishes, ideas grow and people prosper.

Our Mission:

We build the capacity for Manitobans to prosper through innovation, by:

  • Creating strategic partnerships,
  • Encouraging investment,
  • Enabling equitable access to the right tools,
  • Promoting awareness and knowledge, and
  • Championing critical policy development.

Our Strategic Priorities:

Service Transformation

Public demand for new and changing services continues to escalate with growing expectations for immediate, seamless access to interactive services and information through the Internet.

In order to deliver on these service imperatives, government must transform its processes, particularly in the way it uses technology to update systems and the associated infrastructures that are required to support the programs and services Manitobans want.

The responsibility to design and maintain Manitoba's technical infrastructure rests with STEM. Several projects have been identified as essential activities required to ensure government can deliver on its service imperative.

Energy & Climate Change

The Province is committed to protecting Manitoba's resources and expanding its existing conservation efforts. Overall, government seeks to encourage sustainable and efficient use of energy and other resources to decrease Manitoba's dependence on expensive, imported non-renewable resources and increase our ability to export hydro-generated electricity.

STEM plays a significant role in the government's resource conservation efforts by leading and participating in projects that promote renewable energy development, improve energy efficiency and manage resource use to ultimately reduce Manitoba's greenhouse gas emissions and assist Canada in meeting its Kyoto commitments.

Community & Economic Development

Manitoba is moving forward with a long-term plan that recognizes innovation as the key to future economic development. Government is working collaboratively with business, individuals, and communities to strengthen their capacity to succeed and build competencies in an environment that supports sustainable economic growth.

The mission of STEM is to build the capacity for Manitoban's to prosper through innovation. STEM is working to build that capacity by engaging in a number of activities.

Research Capacity & Science/Technology Awareness

The creation of knowledge through basic research is the genesis for many innovation activities in the economy. That knowledge provides a basis for the commercialization of new products, processes and services. Investment in research is critical because of its strong links to innovation, productivity, economic growth and an enhanced quality of life.

STEM provides a coordinating function for all research, innovation science and technology initiatives in government.

Strategic Development & Government ICT Infrastructure

Manitoba is broadening its service approach toward an overall 'citizen first' orientation that focuses on delivering provincial services through 3 key mediums (telephone, online and in-person contact). This approach depends on a robust ICT environment supported by an ICT sector that can deliver goods and services.

STEM has the responsibility to build that environment within government and to extend economic development opportunities to Manitoba's ICT sector as key suppliers.
