Water

People on lake shoreManitoba’s abundance of fresh water sustains our ecosystems, our communities and our economy. Given its importance to our way of life, we know we cannot take our wealth of clean water for granted. Climate change has the potential to seriously damage Manitoba’s water. Severe weather caused by climate change can threaten our watersheds. Even small, long-term increases in average temperature can reduce wildlife populations and permanently damage water systems.

The Manitoba government is working hard to preserve and protect our water by working with communities and organizations to develop Manitoba’s watershed management plans. The province has introduced new planning and water protection laws and is working with industry, communities, cottagers and neighbouring states and provinces to restore Lake Winnipeg. Across our province, industry and municipalities are already moving to improve wastewater treatment and farmers are adopting environmentally beneficial practices.
