The most cost-effective stage at which to install geothermal systems is when the buildings are first being constructed. However, older homes often benefit equally from the reduced energy operating costs.
The initial capital cost is usually higher than other conventional space heating and cooling systems. However the 'whole-life' cost, combining the capital and running costs, can be favourable for heat pumps compared to fossil fuelled systems - and, especially, compared with conventional systems that provide both heating and cooling.
Residential Earth Power Loan - Enhanced
Residential loan maximum increases; interest rate lowered
Manitoba Hydro has increased the maximum Residential Earth Power Loan amount from $15 000 to $20 000; and with support from the Affordable Energy Fund, has reduced the interest rate from 6.5 per cent to 4.9 per cent for the first five years. The fifteen-year loan, offered through the Manitoba Hydro Earth Power Program, provides convenient financing to homeowners installing a geothermal heat pump system in their residence.
Customers are eligible for the loan upon approval by Manitoba Hydro (See "Other Resources"). The customer's geothermal contractor completes all of the pre-approval paperwork.
For potential contractors contact the Manitoba Geothermal Energy Alliance (MGEA)
EcoENERGY Retrofit Program - Natural Resources Canada
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is offering an ecoENERGY Retrofit program where property owners can quality for a federal grant to assist in retrofitting an existing home with a geothermal heat pump system. The program aims to assist homeowners in improving the energy efficiency of their homes, and in reducing their home's impact on the environment.
For more information, contact the office of Energy Efficiency within Natural Resources Canada and/or see "Other Resources" section.
Geothermal heat pump technology offers you consistently good performance and top energy efficiency!
