Manitoba Hydro, the provincial electric utility, is a Crown Corporation owned by the province of Manitoba. Virtually all of the electricity Manitoba Hydro supplies comes from turbines turned by water — a clean, renewable source of energy. This system had been designed to generate sufficient electricity even if the lowest water flows on record should occur.

The rivers in northern Manitoba that supply the power have more than twice the hydroelectric potential of Niagara Falls. To date only 50 percent of these northern resources have been harnessed. Manitoba's abundance of renewable hydroelectric will ensure a stable, reliable and cost-effective supply of electricity long into the future.
The transmission line systems, which connect the province with Ontario, Saskatchewan and the United States, are beneficial for back-up supply during emergencies or periods of high demand. They also provide access to out-of-province markets for selling surplus electricity.
As a result, Manitoba has the lowest published electric rates and Manitoba Hydro has abundant capacity, high system reliability and superior power quality. Manitoba Hydro also provides excellent industrial solutions involving energy management, industrial system optimization and power utility. These advantages make Manitoba one of the most attractive locations for investment in Canada.
