Institutional Profile

University of Manitoba is the first university on Western Canada and was established in 1877. We are an internationally accredited research-intensive institution with approximately 28 000 students and 24 academic units. We offer comprehensive programming at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We offer excellent programs, professors and first-class facilities, all at very reasonable tuition rates. The $56 million state-of-the-art Engineering and Technology Complex was opened in September 2005 and houses some of the world's most advanced laboratories. See http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/engineering/buildings.php for some photographs. We have a long and proud history of excellence and many of our graduates are among the world's leading business people, scientists, researchers and educators. Our extensive 274 hectare campus is located in the safe, suburban community of Winnipeg, population approximately 700 000. Winnipeg boasts year-around sunshine and has a very reasonable cost of living. Winnipeg is a culturally diverse city with many opportunities for a variety of sports and recreation. It is possible to work on-campus upon arrival and off-campus work permits for up to 20 hours a week are also available to students who meet certain criteria. Cooperative work terms are also open to international students in many faculties with the Faculty of Engineering's, the Faculty of Science's and the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Earth, Environment, and Resources' offerings being particularly strong. Following graduation, a work permit could be granted for up to 2 years and the province of Manitoba encourages students to review immigration possibilities. International students are extensively supported by the dedicated programming staff at the International Centre for Students.

University 1: University 1 is an innovative student-centered program for first-year students at the University of Manitoba that is unique in Canada. It is designed to support students in exploring their educational choices by providing excellent academic support services. Most students admitted directly from high school, as well as those who have completed fewer than 24 credit hours at another postsecondary institution, complete the first year of their degree programs in University 1. Through this broad academic framework students acquire prerequisite courses for admission to a specific faculty or school, while sampling courses related to several different disciplines or professions. University 1 offers assistance to first-year students with course selection and future program preparation through a variety of means including the University 1 Student Help Centre, which is a drop-in centre for academic advising. Students also benefit from the services provided at the adjacent Learning Assistance Centre, such as individual appointments with a learning skills instructor, tutoring and study skills workshops in writing, reading, and research.

Carrie Gillis - Student - "I had heard a lot about University 1 at the U of M, but it wasn't until I got there that I really began to see what a great idea it is. There are so many options. I took all my prerequisites for business but was also able to take theatre, which I enjoy. And, I still kept the door open to take law if I wanted to."

Did you know?......that the University of Manitoba's Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Earth, Environment, and Resources offers the first and only Storm-chasing course in Canada?

International Student Support Services: umanitoba.ca/student/ics/ The International Centre for Students (ICS) welcomes international students and helps them to succeed and enjoy their studies at the University of Manitoba and their time in Winnipeg, as well as provides information on work/study abroad programs and educational exchanges. The centre encourages the development of cross-cultural understanding through programs that introduce and team-up international and Canadian students. The ICS provides a host of services to international students including:

  • a unique Welcome Family Program
  • an excellent orientation program including a unique intercultural program near one of Manitoba's many beautiful wilderness lakes
  • a Campus Buddy Program
  • advising, activities, workshops, the Volunteer English Practice Program, and a host of other services

Other student support services include counselling services; career services and a career resource centre; a student employment services office that maintains permanent, summer and part-time job listings; and the University Health Service that provides health care during regular university hours and emergency after-hours services.

English as a Second Language (ESL):
umanitoba.ca/elc
A unique conditional acceptance program through the English Language Centre (ELC), prepares students for admission to undergraduate programs at the University of Manitoba and can be used to satisfy the English language requirement instead of a specific grade on a standardized English test such as the TOEFL. The ELC focuses strictly on English for academic purposes and runs three 14 week terms a year with intake in September, January and May. There are also special English programs and part-time courses to help students in degree programs continue to refine their English skills.

Scholarships and Bursaries:
umanitoba.ca/student/fin_awards
/international_students/index.htm

English as a Second Language (ESL)
umanitoba.ca/elc
Full Time Intensive Academic English Program

This program runs three times a year beginning in September, January, and May. Classes are Monday to Thursday, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, and Friday, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Each program runs for 15 weeks including a one-week mid-term break.

Advanced Levels 1-4

These levels are designed to prepare advanced level students for academic study. English language skills necessary for success in a university setting are emphasized. Some of the functions that are practiced include listening to lectures, learning new vocabulary, practicing reading strategies, giving presentations and writing essays. Study is enhanced by activities with English speaking guests in the classroom, group discussions and role play. Each Friday morning is reserved for special option classes. In addition to classroom activities, the course includes cultural activities around the City of Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba.

Students who successfully complete the course, write the CanTEST© (Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees). Satisfactory test results can be used to meet the language requirements of the University of Manitoba.

Advanced Level 5: Academic English for University and College Entrance (AEPUCE)

The Academic English Program for University and College Entrance (AEPUCE) is the fifth level of the Intensive Academic English Program designed to prepare students for admission to the University of Manitoba. It is a bridge program that links advanced English and university credit courses. A student who successfully completes AEPUCE has met the University of Manitoba English requirements.

A minimum score of 500 on TOEFL© (173 computer based), CanTEST© Band 3.5 or equivalent is required for admission to AEPUCE.

In this course, students practice academic functions required at a university including listening to lectures, taking notes, discussing, reading for analysis and using the library to write a research paper. Each student is assessed on assignments and in-class tests. Students who have attended 80% of the classes and achieved a score of 65% in each of Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking will have met the English language requirement of the University of Manitoba. No further English language testing will be required.

Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Programs
umanitoba.ca/admissions/apply/
firstyearcredit

The University of Manitoba recognizes the Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) enriched secondary school programs. Detailed information is available at the above-noted website.

IB Diploma

Holders of the IB Diploma are acknowledged as holding the equivalent of Manitoba high school graduation standing for purposes of admission. This recognition is significant to IB graduates of provinces outside of Manitoba or countries who do not hold any other provincial or national qualification. To qualify for admission, an IB Diploma holder must present three courses at the Higher Level and three courses at the Standard Level; a minimum in each subject of four with an overall minimum score of 24.

First-year credit

Many courses are eligible for advanced university credit. The minimum AP or IB result required is four, however, some departments may stipulate a higher minimum score. As of September 2005, there is no maximum number of allowable credits for AP or IB credits, and credits may be used to fulfill University of Manitoba entrance requirements. Please see the website for additional information and how to apply for credits.

Tuition and Fees

umanitoba.ca/student/admissions/
finances/tuition_statistics/

Tuition costs at the University of Manitoba are among the lowest in the country - particularly for study at a large, comprehensive, research-intensive institution. We offer a value-based North American university degree at an institution that prides itself on excellent programs, professors and a wide variety of choices for our students. We also offer an international student entrance scholarship program and an international student bursary program. Additionally, The International Centre for Students (ICS) will assist students in the transition to Winnipeg and help to make the most of your campus experience. The centre offers year-round advising on matters ranging from banking to cultural adjustment to study permits. The ICS team also organizes several excursions and volunteer opportunities. We encourage students to learn more at: umanitoba.ca/student/ics. With our scholarship and bursary programs and the ICS international student support centre, in addition to very low tuition fees, the University of Manitoba continues its commitment to accessible education for international students.

According to the "Winnipeg Free Press", Thursday, May 25, 2006 edition, comparative tuitions for a full-time international student in the Faculty of Arts for 2006/07 at select Canadian institutions were:

University, Tuition (in Canadian dollars)
University of Manitoba, $8350
Queen's University, $10 600
University of Saskatchewan, $11 388
University of Toronto, $16 000
University of Alberta, $15 853
University of British Columbia, $17 577
Canadian Average, $11 307

The University of Manitoba clearly offers our students an excellent education with a wide variety of program choices at a very affordable price in a safe, multi-cultural city. The University of Manitoba is over 25% less than the Canadian average!

All undergraduate international students are assessed an additional international student differential fee of 180% calculated on the total tuition fee and details can be found at:
http://umanitoba.ca/student/
admissions/finances/tuition_statistics/

The 10% fee reduction granted by the Manitoba Government does not apply to the international student differential fee. Additional fees are assessed for endowment, student organization and health insurance.

Overall, for University 1 students (University 1 is the first year of many of our programs and is normally comprised of arts and science courses), tuition and associated fees for the fall and winter terms combined would be approximately just over $9000. Books and supplies would be approximately $1700 and could be less, if used textbooks were purchased. The total cost for a full-time student to live in Winnipeg (tuition and associated fees, housing, insurance, food, clothing, entertainment, transportation, miscellaneous, etc.) and attend the University of Manitoba for two terms (September through April) would be in the range of $22 000 even though this figure can vary significantly, depending on lifestyle choices, etc. More details can be found at: umanitoba.ca/student/admissions/apply/international/expenses.shtml
