1 The first quarter (Q1) gives the number of cases diagnosed between January 1 and March 31 of the given year.
The second quarter (Q2) gives the number of cases diagnosed between April 1 and June 30 of the given year.
The third quarter (Q3) gives the number of cases diagnosed between July 1 and September 30 of the given year.
The fourth quarter (Q4) gives the number of cases diagnosed between October 1 and December 31 of the given year.
2 Fluctuations in case numbers are expected as cases are investigated and their information is updated in PHIMS.
3 There are seasonal variations in diagnosis rates for many infections. E.g. Q1 case counts are often lower.
4 Case categories are further defined by the following:
CHLAMYDIA includes lab confirmed cases and those under investigation
CONGENITAL SYPHILIS includes confirmed cases (lab or clinically confirmed cases of early congenital syphilis, late congenital syphilis, and syphilitic stillbirths) and probable cases (probable cases of early congenital syphilis and syphilitic stillbirths)
GONORRHEA includes lab confirmed cases and those under investigation
HEPATITIS B includes acute, perinatal, and newly diagnosed chronic cases
HEPATITIS C includes acute, perinatal, newly diagnosed chronic cases, and unspecified cases
HIV includes newly diagnosed and perinatal cases
INFECTIOUS SYPHILIS includes primary, secondary, and early latent cases
NON-INFECTIOUS SYPHILIS includes late latent and tertiary cases

Data Notes

Data in Context

The content and format of the dashboard are subject to change. Surveillance data reported within represent a snapshot of diagnosed cases at the time of reporting and fluctuations are expected as case investigations are updated. The number of cases for males and females may not add up to the total, as the total is inclusive of non-binary individuals and cases where information on sex is missing. Small numbers of cases may result in unstable rates and should be interpreted with caution. Less than 1% of all STBBI investigations had sex missing.

Provincial STBBI case data are reported annually to the Centre for Communicable Diseases and Infection Control, Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) for inclusion in national surveillance reporting. Differences between provincial and national reports may be due to delays in reporting and the continuous updating of information in Public Health Information Management System (PHIMS).

Case Definition

Unless otherwise specified, the number of laboratory-confirmed cases of provincially notifiable STBBIs are reported. Counts and associated rates are based on residents of Manitoba at the time of diagnosis.

Case categories are further defined by the following:

HIV includes newly diagnosed and perinatal cases

Hepatitis B includes acute, perinatal, and newly diagnosed chronic cases

Hepatitis C includes acute, perinatal, newly diagnosed chronic cases, and unspecified cases

Syphilis

  • “Infectious Syphilis” includes primary, secondary, and early latent cases
  • “Non-infectious Syphilis” includes late latent and tertiary cases

Congenital Syphilis

  • “Congenital Syphilis (Confirmed)” includes lab or clinically confirmed cases of early congenital syphilis, late congenital syphilis, and syphilitic stillbirths
  • “Congenital Syphilis (Probable)” includes probable cases of early congenital syphilis and syphilitic stillbirths

Chlamydia includes lab confirmed cases and those under investigation

Gonorrhea includes lab confirmed cases and those under investigation

Public Health Information Management System (PHIMS)

PHIMS is a secure, integrated electronic public health record designed to assist public health practitioners in Manitoba with management of communicable disease investigations (including sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections) and associated contacts, outbreaks, immunizations and vaccine inventory. Manitoba Health Insurance Registry

The Manitoba Health Insurance Registry contains all individuals who have been registered to receive health care through Manitoba Health at some point in time since 1970.

The population data shown in this report are based on records of residents registered with Manitoba Health as of June 1 of each year. When the most recent year’s population data are unavailable, the previous year is used. You can find the population reports here: https://www.gov.mb.ca/health/population/.

Glossary

Index Date

The index date is the earliest of specimen collection date, lab result date, public health received date, or case classification date. For individuals with congenital syphilis, the index date is their birth date, regardless of age at diagnosis. Index date is used to assign cases to quarter and calendar year. Cases without an index date are excluded.

Number of Cases

The number of reported infections. An individual may be diagnosed with more than one infection in the reported time period.

Crude Rates

Crude rates are calculated for disease-specific categories that reflect newly diagnosed cases among residents of Manitoba based on the mid-year (June 1st) population of the corresponding year.

Quarter

As based on index date:

  • Quarter 1 (Q1) is January 1st to March 31st of a given year
  • Quarter 2 (Q2) is April 1st to June 30th of a given year
  • Quarter 3 (Q3) is July 1st to September 30th of a given year
  • Quarter 4 (Q4) is October 1st to December 31st of a given year

Sex

Sex is identified as based on an individual’s self-report at the time of registration for health services in Manitoba. Response options include male, female, and non-binary.
