Legislative Intern Reunion 2021

The 2020 Intern reunion has been postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19. More information will be posted here at a later date.

Calling all former Manitoba Legislative Interns!

In honour of 2020 marking the 150th anniversary of Manitoba entering Confederation, the Manitoba Legislative Assembly will be hosting a reunion reception for former Legislative Interns on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at the Manitoba Legislative Building.

The Manitoba Legislative Assembly Internship Program was launched in 1985 as a cooperative venture between Manitoba Universities and the Legislative Assembly under the tutelage of Professor Paul G. Thomas.  The program provides opportunities for graduates of Manitoba universities or young Manitobans who have studied elsewhere with an opportunity to experience firsthand the Legislative process within the Manitoba Legislature.

Each year, six university graduates are hired by the Legislative Assembly and are assigned to caucuses to undertake a variety of tasks including long and short-term projects; conducting research and writing briefing papers; preparing speaking notes and speeches and drafting correspondence.  In addition the Interns also attend weekly academic seminars with various persons within government, the private and non-governmental organizations and many public interest groups.

Since 1985, 210 individuals have served as Legislative Interns, with many going on to careers in law, senior levels of the Civil Service, public advocacy groups, the business sector, NGOs and academia.  Two currently serving Members of the Legislative Assembly are former Interns as is the current Clerk of the Legislative Assembly.

As the Hon. Myrna Driedger, Speaker of the House, noted:   “It has been my privilege to be involved with the internship program. Previously, as a member of the official opposition and as a member of government, I had first-hand experience with the invaluable resources and assistance the Interns provide to individual Members of the Legislative Assembly.

It is my privilege to be associated with Manitoba’s Intern program, one of the best in Canada. It is a very rewarding experience as a Speaker to watch these young adults grow and develop their skills during their internship, knowing that a bright future lies ahead for all of them.”

If you are a former Intern and would like to attend the reunion reception, or if you know a former Intern, please contact the Assembly at internreunion@leg.gov.mb.ca or (204) 945-3636 providing your name and contact information and the year you served as an Intern.  If you are unable to attend but would like to share stories or photos, we would love to hear from you.
