Welch Block

Designation Date: February 20, 1990

As Manitoba's communities developed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a variety of commercial services were required, and happily supplied. The list of such endeavours identifies parts of a commercial world that is now past: blacksmith, harness maker, laundries, wheelwright. But some services endure, like barber shops, banks and, of course, stores. Occasionally general, grocery and dry goods stores, even those in small urban centres, might be of ambitious design. But many were small and modest. The former Welch Block is just such a building, a reminder of the kind of fabric that produced the commercial cores of villages and towns..
