Sowden House
26 Crescent Avenue E,
Souris

Sowden House

Designation Date: November 5, 1990
Designation Authority: Town of Souris
Present Owner: Souris Hillcrest Community Corporation Inc.

The unique castellated design of this house sets it apart in the architectural landscape of south-western Manitoba. The house was built in 1910 for Fred Sowden, son of the founder of Souris. It was conceived by architect Carter Brindle to resemble a castle, with its heavy brick corbelling and crenellated tower. Now used as the Hillcrest Museum, the house is a sophisticated example of the nature of ambitions that fuelled the growth of Manitoba communities in the first decades of the twentieth century.
