Gwenmawr, McGregor House

Designation Date: January 14, 1992
Designation Authority: The R.M. of Daly
Present Owner: Privately owned

This dwelling was once the home of the Honourable James Duncan McGregor, an early Brandon pioneer, entrepreneur and Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba from 1929 to 1935. J.D. McGregor homesteaded in the Rapid City area during the 1880s. He quickly earned a reputation as an outstanding cattleman, winning several awards at the renowned Chicago Stock Shows. In 1908 he and several associates conceived the idea of the Brandon Winter Fair. Under their direction the Fair developed into one of Canada’s premier agricultural showcases.

It was at "Gwenmawr," his stockfarms near Brandon (which he named after his daughter Gwen), where he constructed a summer residence in 1914. The house is an early Manitoba example of the Bungalow style, which was becoming very popular in Canada at the time.
