Farm houses in Manitoba from the period between 1890 and 1920 could be either small or large, but often shared a common architectural approach: they were invariably modest in terms of their decorative pretension. There were some farm houses, however, that rose far beyond their neighbours, architecturally. The former Shaver house is one of these. Built in 1901 for the Arthur Shaver family (originally from Ontario), the house is a delightful interpretation of the standard big farm house. Here we find delicate gingerbread ornamentation in the gable ends, decorative patterns in the shingle and brickwork and carved brackets under the roof eave. It is truly a beautiful building.
