Memorial Hall
12-2nd Avenue SW,
Carman

Designation Date: August 25, 1994
Designation Authority: The Town of Carman
Present Owner: The Town of Carman and The R.M. of Dufferin
The Memorial Hall was constructed in memory of the fallen of World War I from the Town of Carman and the Rural Municipality of Dufferin. The hall was erected in 1919-20 for about $68,000 under the supervision of J.F. Brynjolfson, a Winnipeg contractor. The official opening occurred on May 24, 1920. The Memorial Hall is a classically inspired structure constructed of red brick and limestone. The striking façade incorporates a large, coloured glass, arched window sandwiched between two limestone pilasters. "MEMORIAL HALL" is emblazoned on the frieze below the cornice. Two limestone tablets engraved with the words "VIMY" and "MONS," World War I battles, grace the front of the hall. The building's main floor accommodates the municipal offices for the town and the rural municipality. The Great War Veterans' Association Room is the Town Council Chambers and the Community Room is a resting and meeting place. Commemorative plaques, honour rolls and legion wreaths are displayed in the Memorial Room. The second floor is comprised of an auditorium and stage. The basement houses the town jail along with access to the rear bell tower which once summoned firefighters. The original Memorial Hall furnishings were provided by various women's organizations.
