Before the advent of the school district consolidations of the 1950s, more than 1,000 one-room schools dotted the countryside of Manitoba. Of modest size and appointments, these buildings nevertheless were powerful expressions of civic pride. Hilbre School, built in 1916, is a typical example. The simple form belies the careful thought that went into its design. Developed by the Department of Education, most buildings were the result of standardized designs that addressed the physical needs of students and the financial constraints of many school boards.
