Stuart House
478 Eveline Street,
Selkirk

Stuart House

Designation Date: November 10, 1997
Designation Authority: The Town of Selkirk
Present Owner: Selkirk (City)

Built for James Stuart in 1904, this is one of the finest examples of the builder’s trade still remaining in Selkirk. The brick work is first-rate, with plain and dog-toothed spring courses outlining the separation between the two floors. Where such bands encounter a window opening a broad segmental arch was created. The original porch is still intact and boasts fine workmanship in the turned spindles, posts and trim.  James Stuart was well known in Selkirk at the turn of the century, being manager of the Selkirk Electric Light Company, which was the first producer of electricity in the community.
