Boissevain area

Cottingham House

Designation Date: September 16, 1999
Designation Authority: R.M. of Morton
Present Owner: privately owned

A substantial and commodious example of the American Four Square style (so named because of its square floor plan and cube shape), this Boissevain area landmark was built between 1900 and 1904 by noted local stonemason James McLachlan for William Cottingham, a prominent pioneer businessman in Boissevain. The house also has important connections to the Archibald Smith family, and especially to Lorna Smith (1948–78), a well-known local journalist and writer.
