Green Ridge Cemetery
NW 21-2-4E, Green Ridge

Green Ridge Cemetery

Designation Date: July 9, 2002
Designation Authority: R.M. of Franklin
Present Owner: Trustees of Green Ridge Cemetery Association

Established in 1879, Green Ridge Cemetery is a modest example of pioneer Manitoba cemetery practices, and of the evolution of gravemarker designs over the succeeding century. The cemetery abounds with fine examples of the kinds of tall, dramatic granite stones popular at the turn of the century, marking the graves of local pioneers, and also includes more modern responses to grave-marking, like the crypt-lid made popular in the 1920s and 30s in rural Manitoba. Many of the smaller, more modest granite markers are of recent design and recall the ongoing use of the cemetery, in which relatives of the pioneers are laid to rest with their forebears.
