Interlibrary Loans - Our Services to Other Libraries

Who can borrow?

Libraries

All public libraries in Manitoba are registered borrowers in our system and may borrow circulating materials for their clients by interlibrary loan. Contact staff at the Main Reading Room of the Legislative Library .

All other libraries wishing to initiate an interlibrary loan for the first time from us should contact the Main Reading Room at the Legislative Library.

Individuals

Members of the public in Manitoba are asked to contact your local public library for any request of materials held by the Legislative Library.

If you are a member of a university, college or other special library and you want to borrow materials in our online catalogue, contact your library's interlibrary loan services.

If you are not a resident of Manitoba and you want to borrow materials in our online catalogue, contact your library's interlibrary loan services.

Members and staff of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, and employees of Manitoba government departments, agencies and crown corporations may borrow materials directly from the Legislative Library.

What can be borrowed?

Materials which may be borrowed on Interlibrary Loan will have one of these collection codes:

  • GEN - General collection except periodicals for which photocopies can be provided
  • MAN, CAN, PROV, INT - Government Collection
  • NWSP - Microfilmed newspapers may be requested on interlibrary loan only if the Library owns the negatives masters for the microfilm.

All microfilm for the Winnipeg Free Press, Winnipeg Sun, and Winnipeg Tribune must be used at the Library.

Is there a charge for interlibrary loans?

There are no charges to libraries for borrowing materials on interlibrary loan.

Requesting photocopies of articles via ILL

Copying is subject to copyright law and the Library reserves the right to limit the number of copies it will provide.

There is a minimum charge of $5.00 for first 20 photocopied pages and 20¢ for each subsequent photocopy mailed by post.

Microprints are $5.00 minimum charge for up to 5 prints and 50¢ for each subsequent print mailed by post.

For a facsimile there is a $5.00 minimum charge for the first 10 pages and 50¢ per additional page.

What must be consulted on site?

Manitoba government publications more than 40 years old and any for which we have only one copy.

Items that do not circulate, but can be consulted on site, will have one of these collection codes:

  • ARC Archives collection -- Provincial Archives of Manitoba library materials
  • BIB Bibliography Collection
  • GOVI Government Bibliography Collection
  • RBC Rare Book Collection
  • REF Reference Collection (includes indexes)
  • REFG Reference Government Documents Collection
  • SREF Stack Reference Collection
  • NWSP Microfilmed newspapers must be used at the library if the Library does not own the negatives masters for the film.
  • Microfilms for the Winnipeg Free Press, Winnipeg Sun, and Winnipeg Tribune never circulate on interlibrary loan or to the library's clients.
  • GEN/Periodical Photocopies of specific articles can be provided.

The following items also do not circulate on inter-library loan but can be consulted on site:

  • All legislative materials: statutes, bills, debates, committee minutes, etc.
  • Publications deposited under Legislative Library Act of which only one copy is held by the library
  • Census Canada publications
  • Bound volumes of annual reports
  • Magazines, periodicals and newspapers (photocopies of specific articles may be requested)
  • Vertical files, press clippings files, and scrapbooks

Items marked "On order" or "In processing" may not be borrowed until all requests from Government of Manitoba employees and from the Legislative Assembly have been filled (minimum of six weeks).

How long is the borrowing period?

Circulating materials are due back two weeks after receipt on interlibrary loan. Renewals must be requested on or before the due date and will be approved only if no holds have been placed on the item. Only one renewal is permitted for interlibrary loans to other libraries.

How many items can be lent to a library?

A cumulative maximum of seven items (books, documents, or microfilm reels) will be signed out at any given time to a library.

What happens if I lose an item signed out to me?

If materials are reported lost, the borrower's library is charged the cost of replacement and processing.

Materials are also considered to be lost if they have not returned to the Library after three notices regarding their overdue status have been sent to the borrowing library (approximately ten weeks after the initial loan transaction).
