Escort Vehicle Policy

Typically, escort vehicles are required when any load exceeds:

  • 4.60 m in width for daytime travel
  • 3.7 m in width for night travel
  • 30.0 m overall length

Pilot Vehicles and Signs

Where conditions of an oversize or overload permit prescribe that pilot vehicles, signs or lights be provided by the permittee, the vehicle must comply with  the standards for equipment set out  in Part IX of the Vehicle Weights and Dimensions on Classes of Highways Regulation M.R.575/88 (PDF), unless otherwise prescribed by the conditions of the permit.

Night time travel may be allowed up to 4.45m wide and 30m long, with exceptions. Typically, a load in excess of 3.7m wide requires escort vehicles both front and rear for night time travel.
