What’s New at Apprenticeship

NEW: Apprenticeship Manitoba Awards of Distinction
Apprenticeship Manitoba and the Apprenticeship and Certification Board hosted the 17th annual Apprenticeship Awards of Distinction gala on November 15, 2023. This event was a celebration of excellence that recognized the outstanding contributions that employers, journeypersons and instructors make to Manitoba's apprenticeship system. Visit our Events page to review this year's award recipients. NEW: 2023 Skills Canada National Competition
The Manitoba government was proud to be a presenting sponsor at this year’s Skills Canada National Competitions held at the RBC Convention Centre on May 25 and 26th.
The Competition had more than 550 of the most talented students and apprentices in Canada as they performed in Olympic-style skilled trades and technology competitions. The event also included over 50 Try-A-Trade and Technology activities; a “Career Zone”; and industry professionals for students and attendees to engage with and learn more about the benefits that the Skilled Trades offer as a career. The event had record breaking attendance with over 13,000 visitors.
 
Apprenticeship Manitoba congratulates all the competitors from across the country as they represented their province or territory in their chosen Skilled Trade, especially Team Manitoba.

NEW: Suspension of Review and Approval of Any New Accredited Programs for the Trade of Esthetician and the sub-trades of Nail Technician and Skin Care Technician
On April 20, 2023, the Apprenticeship and Certification Board approved the updated Provincial Occupational Standards for the trade of Esthetician and its two sub-trades of Nail Technician and Skin Care Technician.
 
Effective immediately and until further notice, Apprenticeship Manitoba will be suspending the review and approval of any new accredited programs in the trades of Esthetician, Nail Technician and Skin Care Technician.

NEW: Highest Achievement Awards 
The Highest Achievement Awards is a formal awards ceremony held each year to honour the most outstanding new journeypersons, and recognize employers and leaders in Manitoba’s skilled trades.
This year’s 31st Annual Highest Achievement Awards ceremony was held on May 4, 2023 at the Manitoba Legislative Building. The individuals selected for these awards have completed all the requirements of their apprenticeship training and are honoured for excellence in both their academic achievements and on-the-job training.

TECHNICAL TRAINING UPDATE – Potential Strike Action at Assiniboine Community College and Red River College Polytech
 
Apprenticeship Manitoba is aware of the developing situation at Assiniboine Community College and Red River College Polytech that could result in strike action as early as April 11, 2023. The branch is in discussion with the colleges to determine the impact of the potential strike to apprentices. The Apprenticeship Training Coordinates will provide updates to affected apprentices directly through email. Please monitor your email for updates on this situation or contact your Apprenticeship Training Coordinator.

NEW: Designated Trainers Information
The Apprenticeship and Certification – General Regulation has been updated to allow Designated Trainers to continue to supervise apprentices, in the absence of a journeyperson, upon application to Apprenticeship Manitoba. This provision will remain in effect until March 1, 2028. Click here for additional information about the amendment.

2023-2024 Technical Training Registration Information
Apprenticeship Manitoba, in collaboration with the colleges, has finalized the technical training schedule for new classes being held between April 1, 2023 – March 31, 2024.

NEW: Reporting of Apprentice On-The-Job Hours Going Online

Apprenticeship Manitoba is streamlining its processes to become more efficient and respond to our clients’ needs in a timely manner. As of January 2023, all apprentice hours will be reported online using Access Manitoba. Apprentices will no longer be required to complete their "Blue Books".

UPDATE: Bill 61: The Apprenticeship and Certification Amendment Act

On June 14, 2021, Bill 61: The Apprenticeship and Certification Amendment Act was proclaimed and officially came into force. The Bill signals the Manitoba government’s commitment to modernize The Apprenticeship and Certification Act in order to improve governance within Manitoba’s apprenticeship system, ensure stakeholders’ voices are heard and acted on in a responsible manner, and to increase Manitoba’s competitive advantage by ensuring a modern, high-quality apprenticeship system.
