Copper Intrauterine Devices (IUD) Program – Information for Health Care Providers
Effective April 1, 2025, health care providers can order select copper IUDs at no cost through Manitoba’s Materials Distribution Agency (MDA).
Copper IUDs available for order by health care providers through MDA:
- Mona Lisa 10
- Mona Lisa 5 Mini
- Mona Lisa 5 Standard
- Mona Lisa N.
Copper IUDs are not covered under the Manitoba Enhanced Pharmacare Program (MEPP). Additional information about MEPP is available on the Manitoba Enhanced Pharmacare Program page.

How to Order Copper IUDs
To order copper IUDs, health care providers must complete the following steps.
1. Register Your Clinic Location
Health care providers must first register their clinic (the physical location) with the Department of Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care (HSLTC). The registration form can be found here: Manitoba Copper IUD Health Care Provider Registration Form
Once registered, you will receive an email with the order form and directions.
2. Submit Orders
Complete the order form: MB Birth Control IUD Order Form
Submit the completed form to Birth.Control@gov.mb.ca
Please note the following:
- The shipping address must be the physical address of the clinic.
- Five (5) products may be ordered at a time; orders of more than five will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and may result in shipping delays.
- Delivery by Canada Post can be expected seven to ten business days from when your order is approved.
Frequently Asked Questions for Health Care Professionals
- Copper IUDs are considered “devices” and could not be covered under MEPP as other birth control products, such as hormonal IUDs or oral birth control pills.
- No. Hormonal IUDs are available and covered through pharmacies under MEPP.
- Clients must follow the MEPP process to receive free coverage of eligible medications.

- Copper IUDs dispensed through community pharmacies are not covered under the Manitoba Enhanced Pharmacare Program (MEPP).
- Health care providers must order copper IUDs for their clients directly from MDA, at no cost.
- Yes, registration for copper IUDs is by location not health care provider.
- HSLTC encourages health care providers to coordinate the ordering of copper IUDs to ensure a sufficient supply is available at the clinic, but stockpiling is not recommended.
- Five (5) products may be ordered at a time.
- Health care providers may order copper IUDs to have “on-hand”. However, stockpiling is not recommended. Orders over five (5) units will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and may result in shipping delays.
- Delivery can be expected within seven to ten business days from when your order is approved.
- The MDA client number is used to bill HSLTC directly for all costs incurred with the ordering of copper IUDs including the shipping.
