Scott Anderson

Scott Anderson is the Acting Chief Geologist of the Precambrian Geoscience Section of the MGS. Scott obtained a B.Sc. from the University of Manitoba (1992) and a Ph.D. from Dalhousie University (1998). His Ph.D. research was focused on the tectonothermal evolution of the Laurentian margin in north-central Newfoundland. Prior to joining MGS in 2001, Scott worked four years in Mexico, conducting gold exploration as the Senior Structural Geologist for Campbell Resources Inc. His current research is focused on the tectonic and metallogenic evolution of the western Superior Province and the south margin of the Hearne craton, and the structural geology of orogenic gold deposits in the Rice Lake greenstone belt.

Jim received his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Geology (Stratigraphy) from the University of Manitoba. He has worked for the Minerals Division of the Provincial Government, since 1975 in various geological functions and has been an Industrial Minerals Geologist, with the Manitoba Geological Survey, since 1990. Jim is currently involved in studies of potential Phanerozoic mineral deposits (including MVT and REE) and shallow gas potential in Manitoba; in addition to ongoing Industrial Mineral investigations.

Christian Böhm

Christian Böhm received his diploma degree in structural geology and Ph.D. in geochronology and isotope geology from ETH Zurich in Switzerland. He did post-doctoral research and teaching at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, prior to joining the Manitoba Geological Survey in 2002. In Manitoba Christian’s focus has primarily been on the Precambrian evolution of the Archean Superior and Hearne cratons using geological mapping, geochemistry, structural, isotope and geochronological methods. Since 2009 Christian has been Head of the Precambrian Mapping section, and since January 2013 Acting Director of the Manitoba Geological Survey.

Antoine Caté is a third-year PhD student at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique in Quebec City. His project focusses on the nature and geometry of the Lalor auriferous VMS deposit as part of an on-going collaborative research project by the Geological Survey of Canada, Hudbay, the INRS and the University of Ottawa.

Chris obtained a BSc in geology from Brandon University in 2003, an MSc from the University of Western Ontario in 2005, and a PhD at the University of Calgary in 2013. Chris has been working at the Manitoba Geological Survey since 2008. His work has focused on the geology of the Thompson Nickel Belt and deciphering the geology of high-grade metamorphic domains.

Corey completed his Bachelor’s degree in zoology at the University of Alberta and is currently completing post-graduate work on an applied research project related to moose ecology and oil sands mining. He is a professional biologist with more than 19 years of experience.  He practices in wildlife biology and vegetation ecology, wildlife and vegetation assessments, wildlife management and monitoring, and environmental impact assessment (EIA).  His experience includes: vegetation inventory; mitigation and monitoring; soils inventory and mitigation; and, wildlife inventory, mitigation and monitoring.  He has worked on Projects across Canada (east coast to west coast) and in Canada’s north (NWT and NU), in the United States, Peru and west Africa.  Corey has also participated in regional collaborative wildlife studies between multiple industry groups, stakeholders, government and academic researchers. Most recently he has worked on the environmental permitting application for Agnico Eagle’s Meliadine Gold Mine project in Nunavut.

Mostafa Fayek

Mostafa Fayek received an undergraduate double honors degree in Geology and Chemistry from Carleton University in 1989. He worked in mineral exploration for two years before pursuing his Ph. D. degree at the University of Saskatchewan where he graduated in 1996.  He was awarded a NSERC postdoctoral fellowship and split his time between the University of New Mexico and Queen’s University. He then moved to California as a postdoctoral researcher before taking a joint faculty position in 2000 between the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He was awarded a Tier II Canada Research Chair in 2006 (renewed in 2011). His areas of research include uranium geochemistry, mineral deposits, archaeometry, and environmental geoscience. He is currently the Department Head of Geological Sciences at the University of Manitoba.

Allison Fenske

Allison’s practice with TDS is primarily focused on Aboriginal Law (with an emphasis on Natural Resource Development and Indian Residential School claims) and Litigation. She also practices in the area of administrative law. Allison regularly acts for companies in the natural resources sector in relation to Aboriginal and Treaty rights and the Crown obligations of consultation and accommodation. She has been part of a team of counsel acting for a major hydro utility in the negotiation and conclusion of adverse effects agreements in relation to significant hydro-electric development. She speaks regularly on the topics of aboriginal law, consultation and doing business with First Nations. She has previously co-chaired the Canadian Bar Association’s National Aboriginal Law Conference on the topic of Natural Resources.

Simon Gagné

Simon has been a geologist with the Manitoba Geological Survey since 2009.  His research interests include metamorphic petrology, structural controls on mineral deposits, and mineral deposit geology. He is particularly interested in working on lode gold and VMS deposits. After spending several summers doing geological investigations in Snow Lake, he is now pursuing projects in the Cranberry Portage and Reed Lake area. He obtained a B.Sc. in Geology from Université du Québec à Montréal in 2001 and a M.Sc. in Geology from Dalhousie University in 2004.

Michel Houlé

Michel obtained a M.Sc. degree in Geology from Laval University (Québec City) 2000 and a Ph.D. (Earth Sciences) from the University of Ottawa in 2008. His studies focused on the Cr-PGE mineralization associated with an ultramafic-mafic layered intrusion (Menarik Igneous Complex), and on the physical volcanology and metallogeny of komatiites in the Abitibi greenstone belt, respectively. From 2003 to 2009, as senior geoscientist with the Ontario Geological Survey, he conducted regional bedrock mapping and mineral assessments for Ni-Cu-(PGE) sulfide mineralization in the Abitibi greenstone belt. He is currently a research scientist with Geological Survey of Canada since 2009, where he is interested in the nature and origin of ultramafic/mafic complexes and/or flows in Canada and especially the understanding of the genesis of nickel-copper, platinum-group elements, and chrome mineralization related to those volcanic and/or igneous rocks.

Glen Kuntz

Glen is a registered Professional Geoscientist (Ontario) with over 20 years of broad-based expertise in all facets of exploration, mineral resources/reserves, reconciliation, production statistics, mine planning/scheduling, mine production, business development, and executive management. He graduated with a B.Sc. Degree in geology from University of Manitoba in 1991 and a premasters program in geo statistics in 1992. Glen has held positions of increasing responsibility with mining companies including Noranda, Vale, Rea Gold and Placer Dome (Canada and Australian Operations). Glen started his career 20 years ago as an exploration geologist with Noranda Exploration at the Monument Bay/Stull Lake camp and spent 6 years at Placer Dome - Campbell mine in the Red Lake operation in various project/team lead roles. In addition to his role with Mega, Glen currently holds an active position as a member of the Mining Association of Manitoba Inc.’s Aboriginal Relations Committee which was created to assist members in understanding and addressing First Nations’ and Aboriginal peoples’ priorities, challenges and issues, in Manitoba, as well as to assist First Nations and Aboriginal peoples in understanding the mineral exploration and mining sector.

Robert Linnen

Bob completed a BSc at Queen’s University in 1979, and MSc and PhD degrees from McGill University (1985, Trout Lake porphyry Mo deposit, B.C. and 1992, Sn-W metallogeny in Thailand, respectively). After completing post-doctoral work at CNRS in Orléans, France and at the Bayerisches Geoinstitut, Bayreuth, Germany (experiments on metal behaviour in melts) he was an Associate Professor at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Waterloo from 1997 to 2010. Since 2010 he has been the Robert Hodder Chair in Economic Geology at the Department of Earth Sciences at Western University. He is the Director of Resource Geoscience Western and the Gold Site Leader for the CMIC Footprints project. His current research involves field and experimental aspects of metals, particularly critical metals and precious metals, in magmatic-hydrothermal systems and the footprints of these systems.

Tania graduated in Geology in 2002 from University of Porto, Portugal. After a brief period of time in consulting she obtained her PhD in Geology in 2009 from the University of Porto studying Li-Sn-Nb-Ta mineralization in granitic pegmatites. In 2010 and 2011 Tania worked with Anton Chakhmouradian at the University of Manitoba on the mineralogy of alkaline rocks and carbonatites. Tania has worked for the Manitoba Geological Survey since November 2011.

Patrick joined the Geological Survey of Canada in Quebec City in 2006 as a research scientist after having obtained his Ph.D. at the Institut national de la Recherche scientifique in 2005 and after having worked as a project geologist for Agnico-Eagle Mines Exploration from 2004 to 2006. Patrick received the Society of Economic Geologists Waldemar Lindgren Award in 2011 and the Geological Association of Canada Mineral Deposits Division William Harvey Gross Medal in 2009.

Linda obtained her B.Sc (hons) in Geological Sciences from the University of Manitoba in 2006. She joined the Manitoba Geological Survey and began working in the Kisseynew domain in the same year. Linda has provided MGS community liaison programs in First Nations since 2009, becoming a contact person and sharing geological land use information with Manitoba’s remote and First Nation communities. She recently has undertaken an additional role with Mineral Resources as A/Aboriginal Issues Policy Analyst.

Michelle Nicolas

Michelle attained her B.Sc. Honours and M.Sc. in geology from the University of Manitoba.  She joined the Manitoba Government in 1998 as a Petroleum Geologist with the Petroleum Branch of Manitoba Mineral Resources, where she provided geological support for regulated requirements and issues. She joined the Manitoba Geological Survey in 2007 as a Petroleum Geologist and Phanerozoic Stratigrapher, and is currently the Acting Chief Geologist for the Sedimentary Geoscience section, where she is involved in petroleum and stratigraphic research of Manitoba’s two Phanerozoic sedimentary basins. Over the years, she has participated in many multi-jurisdictional projects, including the Targeted Geoscience Initiative 2: Williston Basin, the GEM Energy: Hudson Bay and Foxe Basins Project, and the GEM 2: Hudson Bay and Ungava Project. She has done work on most of the Phanerozoic formations in the Williston Basin, including all the gas-bearing Cretaceous shales, Mississippian formations, Bakken, Torquay, Duperow, potash-bearing Prairie Evaporite, Winnipegosis and Winnipeg formations.  She also works on the stratigraphy and hydrocarbon potential of the frontier Hudson Bay Basin. She is a registered Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM).

Dave is a Professional Geoscientist with nearly 30 years of experience in exploration and applied research specializing in ore deposits associated with mafic and ultramafic magmatic suites.  His more recent professional experience includes managing a private consulting business, being a Director of White Cap Exploration and in the role of global nickel commodity leader for Anglo American.  Prior to this Dave was a Senior Geologist with Falconbridge Ltd. and a mineral deposits geologist with the Manitoba Geological Survey, where he had the opportunity to work on Cu-Ni-PGE projects in the Bird River Belt.  He is currently Vice President and Head of Exploration for North American Palladium Ltd.

Rob Penner

Rob is the Executive Director of the Northern Manitoba Mining Academy in Flin Flon and Associate Vice-President of Career and Workforce Development at University College of the North. Prior to this, Rob was Chair of Sciences within the Faculty of Arts and Science at UCN and also served UCN as the Dean of Health and Applied Science, Head of the Department of Renewable Resources, and Ecotourism Project Manager within the Northern Forest Diversification Centre. His academic training and experiences are within the areas of biology, ecology, and natural resources management.  In addition to his career in administration, education, and research, Rob has a diversity of experiences spanning from his start as a motorcycle mechanic to computer software technician, farmer, canoe guide, biologist, and international development practitioner, among others jobs. This multiplicity of experiences make his resume look like a mess but have convinced him of the power of ‘cross-pollination’ by working with diverse groups and people.

Stephen obtained B.Sc.(Hons.) and M.Sc. degrees from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a Ph.D. the University of British Columbia. From 2001-2008 he was Assistant Professor (2001-2004) and Associate Professor (2004-2008) in the Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC) and Department of Earth Sciences at Laurentian University. From 2007-2009 he was the principal of SJP GeoConsulting, a St. John's-based geological consulting firm, and since December 2009 he has been an Associate Professor (2009-2014) and Professor (2014-present) and the NSERC-Altius Industrial Research Chair in the Metallogeny of Ores in Volcanic and Sedimentary Basins in the Department of Earth Sciences at Memorial University. He is also currently the Technical Leader for Lithogeochemistry for the NSERC-Canadian Mining Innovation Council Footprints Project. His research is in application of field methods, lithogeochemistry, and isotopes to understanding mineral deposit genesis and exploration, particularly volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. He is a former winner of the Lindgren Medal of the Society of Economic Geologists, the William Harvey Gross Medal of the Mineral Deposits Division of the Geological Association of Canada, and the Past President's Memorial Award of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum.

Ernst Schetselaar

Ernst (Ph.D. Delft Technical University, 2000, the Netherlands) is a structural geologist and 3D modelling expert with 25 years of experience in applying data integration methods to geological mapping and exploration. For 17 years he did research and teaching in structural geology, GIS and geological remote sensing at the Geological Survey Division of ITC in Enschede, the Netherlands, prior to joining the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa in 2007. His current research focuses on 3D modelling of geological, geophysical and geochemical data to enhance insight in VMS and SEDEX ore systems and contribute to the development of exploration at greater depths.

Jon Scoates

Jon began an odyssey investigating mafic-ultramafic rocks and their associated mineral deposits in 1959, exploring gabbro-hosted copper mineralization in the Labrador Trough. In the early 1960s he completed MSc and PhD theses on ultramafic rocks and their associated Ni-Cu-PGE ores at Werner-Gordon Lake, northwestern Ontario. Layered intrusions that attracted his interest during his tenure with the Manitoba Geological Survey (1965-1983) and the Geological Survey of Canada (1960-1965; 1983-1995) included the Muskox intrusion, the Fox River sill, the Bird River sill, the Garner Lake intrusion, and Falcon Lake igneous complex. Mafic-ultramafic dikes of the Molson swarm also provided research activities. Other layered intrusions which Jon toured and sampled during his career included the Duke Island complex, Stillwater complex, Bushveld complex, Skaergaard intrusion and Rum complex. He has authored or coauthored more than ninety publications (government maps and reports, and various papers and abstracts). From 1995 until recently he provided consulting services in his area of expertise. He is currently enjoying life in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.

John is a partner with over 25 years experience in the areas of environmental law, natural resources and energy law, commercial law, property development, and municipal law. John has particular experience in natural resource development, contaminated sites, mining and mine rehabilitation, infrastructure projects, environmental approvals and licensing. John is a trained mediator and a roster member of the Canadian Centre for Environmental Arbitration and Mediation. John is named in the Chambers Global Guide to the World’s Leading Business Lawyers 2013 and among the “most highly regarded individuals” under Environmental Law in the Who’s Who Legal: Canada 2014  Guide to the World’s Leading Lawyers,.  He has been repeatedly named to the Lexpert®/American Lawyer Guide to the 500 Leading Lawyers in Canada and is listed in the Canadian Legal LEXPERT Directory under both Environmental Law and Property Development, and by Best Lawyers® under Environmental and Natural Resources law, among other recognitions. He appears regularly before government licensing bodies and administrative tribunals including the Manitoba Clean Environment Commission and Municipal Board, municipal councils, provincial legislative committees and has appeared in all levels of court in Manitoba and in the Federal Court in connection with environmental, resource, regulatory municipal, and property issues. He acted as counsel to a historic mine operator in the settlement of a potential $42 Million environmental rehabilitation liability. He acted in the multi-million dollar settlememt of the first multi-party dispute under The Contaminated Sites Remediation Act. He was co-counsel IPSCO Recycling Inc., General Scrap & Car Shredder and others in the successful defence of a novel injunction application advanced by HMQ Canada under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, resulting in a $0.5 Million award in costs against Environment Canada.

Rod Thomas

Rod is the President of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC). Throughout his career, Rod has worked in mineral exploration and development in both the senior and junior mining sectors as an exploration geologist and executive. Rod is a strong advocate of the mineral exploration and development industry as a primary driver of wealth creation in Canada and around the world. Rod received his undergraduate degree from McGill University, followed by an Applied Master of Science degree from Queen’s University. After finishing his postgraduate education in geology in the late 1970s, Rod worked in mineral exploration for several major mining companies, including Urangesellschaft, SMDC, Utah Mines and BHP.  After leaving BHP, Rod worked in the junior sector in various senior roles in both technical and executive capacities. Rod returned to the senior mining sector in 2008 and is currently General Manager and Director of Votorantim Metals Canada Inc., a subsidiary of Votorantim Metais that is part of the Votorantim Group and has more than 40,000 employees operating in 20 countries. Rod initially got involved with the PDAC in the early 1990s by helping out with the convention’s nascent Investors Exchange that had 18 booths at the time. He later enhanced the Core Shack and eventually chaired the PDAC Convention during the rapid growth period of 2006 to 2008 when attendance nearly doubled in a three-year period. Since becoming a director in 2006, Rod has also served on the Audit Committee, sits on the Executive Committee, and is a member of the Awards Committee.

Michelle Trommelen

Michelle Trommelen is the Manitoba Geological Survey’s Quaternary Geologist. She obtained her MSc. at the University of Victoria in 2006, and her PhD at the University of Waterloo in 2013. Her research focuses on interpretation of the surficial geology in northern Manitoba, including mapping, reconstruction of ice flow and erratic transport distances, and palaeoglaciology. Prior to joining the MGS, Michelle worked for a surficial geologist for Stantec, mainly on environmental impact assessments and terrain stability.

Robert Winton

As leader of the Manitoba Business Unit, Rob provides strategic and operational leadership for all aspects of Hudbay’s activities in Manitoba. He is accountable for managing capital and human resources and ensuring compliance with regional, corporate and global policies and procedures and is responsible for ensuring a high-performance culture that is capable of responding and adapting to growth and change. A veteran of Hudbay’s Manitoba operations, Rob joined Hudbay in 1997 and has held advancing roles at the mill, zinc plant and former copper smelter, leading surface operations and maintenance departments before his promotion to leader of the Manitoba Business Unit. Rob graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He has been a member of Professional Engineers of Saskatchewan since 2000.

Eric (Ph.D., P.Geo.) has been trained and practised as an Economic Geologist, and worked as a faculty member in the University of Science and Technology of China for ten years and as an Exploration Geologist for few mining companies including INCO (now Vale) for seven years. Eric joined the Manitoba Geological Survey in June 2011 as a Mineral Deposit Geologist, investigating geology and metallogeny of various ore deposits via geological mapping, lithogeochemistry, petrology, and GIS analysis to provide fundamental knowledge of geosciences for mining industry, academia and the public. His interests of research include magmatic nickel-copper-PGE deposits, intrusion-related gold deposits, and alkaline rock-carbonatite associated rare earth element deposits.
