Brandon Regeneration Strategy
On December 7, 2011, the Brandon Regeneration Strategy (BRS) Memorandum of Collaboration (MOC) was signed by the Honourable Ron Lemieux, Minister of Municipal Government and Her Worship Shari Decter Hirst, Brandon's Mayor. The BRS is a comprehensive 5-year initiative to support the renewal of Brandon's older areas with a focus on the downtown. The MOC will run to March 31, 2017.
Manitoba and Brandon recognize the need to develop a coordinated approach to physical renewal, economic development and social inclusion, particularly within the Downtown area.
Objectives of the BRS MOC are:
Physical Renewal - to encourage downtown living through the development of mixed use and affordable housing projects; stimulate new commercial, cultural and recreational developments; and identify and support key capital infrastructure projects and heritage preservation initiatives.
- June 30, 2011 - Historic McKenzie Building Redevelopment to Benefit from Provincial/City Community Tax Increment Financing
- Upper Storey Residential Development Initiative - delivered by Renaissance Brandon
- September 25 - Province Launches Transformational Initiative for Downtown Brandon
Economic Development - to stimulate strategic community economic development and business development opportunities to strengthen and diversify the economic base of the Downtown.
Social Inclusion - to enhance the social and economic well-being of diverse residential populations, including Aboriginal and new immigrant populations; address issues of affordable housing, recreation, safety and training and education in the Downtown and within the Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation’s geographic boundaries.
