Definitions of Terms & Additional Information - for registration form

PRESENT ADDRESS:
This is your current mailing address and tells us where we can reach you now. Example: attending a university, college or school out of province or away from your Manitoba home community. Some applicants may only be at their present address for part of the year.

PERMANENT ADDRESS:student
This is where we can reach you when you are not at your present address. Example: where you live with your parent(s) or guardian(s). This may be the same as your present address.

The permanent address helps STEP Services identify students who may be returning to their home community for the summer.

MESSAGE PHONE:
This number is different from your present or permanent telephone number. It could be your cellular number, a phone number that has voice mail or the number of a person who can take a message for you. Example: your parent/guardian/spouse's work or cellular phone number. STEP Services contacts students only by phone, so it is important that we have all the numbers where you can be reached.

OTHER WORK LOCATIONS:
These are the locations within Manitoba other than your present or permanent address. You must have your own accommodations or be able to commute to the job from these locations. Example: a family cottage or a relative's home.

WORK AWAY FROM HOME:
Some jobs involve travel and require students to stay at a location overnight. The length of time can vary from one day to the duration of the job.

POST-SECONDARY STUDENTS:
These are students enrolled in College or University.

AGE GROUP:
This is used to determine your eligibility to register with STEP Services. You can register if you are 16 years old and over, attending school this academic year ("student") or between the ages of 16-24, not attending school and working 20 hours a week or less ("youth").

DATE OF BIRTH:
This information is used to determine your eligibility to register with STEP Services. To register, you must be at least 16 years old on or before August 1, 2008.

GENDER IDENTIFICATION:
This information is used for statistical purposes only.

CITIZENSHIP:
Canadian – Anyone who is a Canadian citizen.

Landed Immigrant - A person who has come to Canada as an immigrant and is allowed to remain in Canada permanently.

International Student - Any non-Canadian citizen who is a Temporary Resident enrolled in a full-time course of study at a public educational institution in Canada.

OPTIONAL SECTION:
STEP Services gathers this information to promote the hiring of students from designated employment equity groups. Qualified students from these groups are included for referral to jobs matching their skills and education.

GirlEDUCATION:
Some jobs may require specific education such as engineering, law, agriculture, management, computer technology or nursing. Some jobs require specific years of study as well as specific majors/courses. STEP Services conducts a computer search based on these requirements, so completing this section accurately ensures applicants are matched up with appropriate jobs. You must complete this section whether you are a student or a youth.

YEAR OF STUDIES:
The year of study you are presently enrolled in at your faculty.

FACULTY:
The faculty you are presently enrolled in. If your faculty is not mentioned on the form, choose "Other" and type in your faculty.

MAJORS:
The course(s) you are currently majoring in. If you are declaring a major, indicate no more than two from the education listing.

CURRENT COURSES:
The courses you are taking this academic year that are not your declared majors. Indicate up to five courses from the education listing.

COLLEGE/TECH. SCHOOL:
The year and program of studies you are currently enrolled in.

CAREER SKILLS:
The skills you acquired through either school, employment, volunteer work or hobbies. Indicate ONLY the skills that you think are relevant to potential summer and part-time jobs.

COMPUTER SKILLS:
Same as above.

  • Class 1: All vehicles including semi-trailers, trucks and buses.
  • Class 2: All vehicles including buses.
  • Class 3: All vehicles including trucks with more than 2 axles.
  • Class 4 – All vehicles including taxis, ambulances and small buses.
  • Class 5 – Passenger cars, trucks and vans.
  • Graduated Driver's Licensing Program - includes all new drivers

EARLIEST TIME FOR SUMMER EMPLOYMENT:
This is the date you are available to start a summer job after exams are finished. These dates are approximate and do not apply to Part-time STEP and co-op jobs.
