
What kinds of jobs are available? How many students
are hired?
A wide variety - clerical, research assistant, travel
counsellor, lab assistant, labourer, computer programming
and/or applications, etc. Approximately
1300 students
are hired in summer jobs and 150 post-secondary students
are hired in part-time jobs during the school year.
Which departments hire students?
Almost all departments hire students. The departments
of Family Services and Housing, Education, Citizenship
and Youth, Infrastructure and Transportation, and Conservation
hire the largest number of students. Manitoba Hydro also
hires students.
What are the wages?
Salaries for jobs with the provincial government are based
on the job descriptions and generally range from $8.72 to $11.30 per hour. Most jobs pay $11.30 per hour. Some
jobs paying $10.39 per hour and up are also available with
Manitoba Hydro. The salaries for Green Team jobs start
at $8.50 per hour.
What are my chances of getting one of these jobs?
It depends on how well your skills and education meet the
requirements of the jobs available. It also depends on how
many other students have the same skills, experiences and
educational background as you do.
Will there be jobs with banks, insurance companies, law
offices...?
No, because STEP Services refers students to jobs within provincial
government departments, related organizations and the Green
Team programs.
What are the hours?
They vary with the job. Mostly 8:00 - 4:00 or 8:30 - 4:30.
Are there shift jobs?
A few. Examples include travel counsellor, camp counsellor
and park attendant.
I have a workplace safety issue, who can I contact about
it?
The legislation covers all provincial work places.

I am only interested in a specific type of job. How can
I apply for it?
You can't apply for a specific type of job. If you are interested
in one area only, just enter your skills and education that
relate to that job. But realize that by doing this, you are
limiting your chances.
What is Cooperative Education and am I eligible?
Cooperative education programs combine on-the-job experience
with classroom theory by offering alternating terms of paid
employment and academic study. Year-round placements are available
with provincial government departments for post-secondary
students enrolled in Cooperative Education Programs. Job referrals
are arranged through Cooperative Education Program Coordinators
at the colleges and universities.
