Municipal Assistance Program

As of June 1, 2004, municipalities no longer administer income assistance in rural and northern Manitoba. The Employment and Income Assistance Amendment Act has established one system for income assistance across the province through the Employment and Income Assistance (EIA) program.

The EIA program is now responsible for administering all income assistance in Manitoba, which will help ensure the consistent and effective delivery of services throughout the province. The one-tier system provides all Manitobans with consistent benefits and uniform policies and programs, administered by staff specifically trained for this type of work. All participants now have access to training and employment readiness programs.

Prior to June 1, 2004, non-disabled single people, childless couples and two-parent families with children received assistance from their local municipality under the municipal assistance program.

For more information about the Employment and Income Assistance program, please visit the EIA Program page or the EIA Facts pages.
