The Speaker of the House

Hon. Daryl Reid

Daryl Reid is a third-generation resident of Transcona. An NDP activist for over twenty years, Daryl has inherited his political beliefs and principles from his parents and grandparents, who served in the CCF/NDP movement in Transcona.

As an employee of CN Rail, Daryl began his career at the Transcona shops in 1969. He served as a shop steward and executive board member for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), and as a member of the Shop Safety Committee. Daryl was also the National President of his railway employee association, from 1986 to 1990.

Daryl has participated in community sports as both a coach and player, including hockey and curling, serving as hockey coach for Oxford Heights Community Club, Park City West Community Club and as coach for the Transcona Turbos.

Daryl is married to Sheila Grierson and together they raised three children. They are members of the Transcona Memorial United Church.

Daryl believes that it is most important to have effective and consistent representation for the working people of Transcona. As the re-elected MLA for the Transcona Constituency, he will continue to work for a clean environment, accessible health care, equal education opportunities, fair taxes and jobs for all Manitobans.

Daryl was first elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly in the 1990 Provincial general election and was re-elected in 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011. Prior to joining the government benches in 1999, his NDP Critic responsibilities had included Labour, Workplace Safety and Health, Highways and Transportation and Workers Compensation.

In 2000, Daryl served as the chairperson for the Manitoba Government's Graduated Driver Licencing Task Force. Daryl served as the chairperson of the Manitoba Government's 2020 Manitoba Transportation Task Force and also served 12 years on the Board of Directors of the Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation.

On October 20, 2011, Daryl was elected by the Members of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly to become the Speaker.
