Beginning in 1903 the Department of Education began supplying school districts with standardized designs that ensured a high level of comfort, safety and aesthetic interest. Designs were frequently introduced to address new concerns and changing tastes. A design that was popular between 1910 and 1920, used on the Verona School in its construction in 1918 by George Gourley, was based on the bungalow designs then becoming popular for houses in Manitoba. With its hipped roof and broad welcoming porch the school was surely a welcoming presence for its young students.
