Gardenton Truss Bridge

Designation Date: February 5, 2002
Designation Authority: R.M. of Stuartburn
Present Owner: R.M. of Stuartburn

The bridge that crosses the Roseau River at Gardenton is an important reminder of the province's early efforts to create a first-rate transportation network. Built in 1918, the bridge features the Howe truss, a system of triangulated members forming a rigid framework that produced a comparatively light structure that still could support heavy loads. Where once farmers would have had to wait for an irregular ferry service, the new bridges allowed for easy and efficient movement of goods and people.
