Over Width Vehicles or Loads

A permit is required when the overall width of vehicle (including its load) exceeds 2.6 m.

You can apply for an annual permit in the following jurisdictions if the width of the vehicle or load does not exceed:

3.7 m Province of Manitoba and the City of Brandon
3.7 m (divisible loads) City of Winnipeg
4.6 m (non-divisible loads) City of Winnipeg

Unless the vehicle and load meet the criteria laid out in another standard, the following apply:

  • The permit is valid for truck, truck tractors with a single semitrailer, and B-train and Super B combinations only.
  • B-train and Super B combinations must meet legal length requirements.
  • Any vehicle with a non-divisible load in excess of the annual dimensions listed above can apply for a single trip permit.
  • Overweight axles or axle groups are not allowed under annual over width permits.
  • On provincial roads and in the City of Brandon, the load must be non-divisible.
  • The City of Winnipeg allows single trip permits for divisible loads to a maximum of 3.7 m, regardless of commodity. Anything wider must be non-divisible.
  • The load must be placed on the trailer in the narrowest possible way.
  • Long combination vehicles are not eligible for over width permits.
  • Empty trailers shall not exceed 2.6 m overall width.

Note: General Conditions must be followed for any permitted vehicle. There will be additional conditions that apply if the vehicle or load is also over length, over height or overweight.

Standard Over Width Permit Conditions

Width conditions are applied cumulatively. The operator must adhere to all conditions up to and including those for the maximum length of the load or vehicle, whichever is greater.
For example, if the load is 2.70 m wide, then all conditions from the 2.60 m and 3.05 m categories would apply.
