Dispute Over Guardianship
Hilda Blake’s two brushes with the law left valuable clues about her state of mind and about a young woman’s life in the late 19th century. In particular, the evidence presented before the County Court in the custody battle between Mary Rex and A.P. Stewart reveals the difficulties Blake experienced as a young orphan and servant in a foreign land. The case generated testimony from the Stewart and Rex families, as well as from Blake’s guardians in England and Hilda Blake herself.
