Fort George

In 1824, Kennedy was given command of another former North West Company post, Fort George, which was located at the mouth of the Columbia River. Before proceeding to his new post, Governor Simpson assigned Kennedy another task. He and Dr. John McLaughlin, the new chief factor of Spokane House, were sent to find a site on the northern bank of the Columbia that could serve as the new headquarters of the Columbia District. The construction of Fort Vancouver began the next spring at the site chosen by Kennedy and McLaughlin.
