Sector Summary

Manitoba is home to a highly diversified financial services sector including firms that are leaders in property and casualty insurance, life insurance, mutual funds, wealth management, and leasing. The sector is supported by a highly skilled workforce and world-class systems for information technology and communications. Manitoba’s financial services sector employs over 20,000 persons.

• Winnipeg is the headquarters for industry-leading insurance, mutual funds and leasing firms.

• Great-West Lifeco Inc., Canada’s largest insurer

• IGM Financial Inc. is Canada’s largest mutual fund distributor

• Winnipeg is also home to two of Canada’s largest property and casualty insurers, the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company and Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation

• All of the “big six” Canadian banks have significant operations in Winnipeg, including extensive call-centre and back-office financial services functions. 

• Winnipeg is home to National Leasing Company, Canada’s largest independent leasing company.
