Manage Your Apprenticeship

Your time spent as an apprentice comes with a variety of exciting opportunities. You’ll take on new challenges, learn from experts in the trade and feel pride in your work. You’ll be able to network with others, making friends on the job and in the classroom.

You are encouraged to take initiative, work hard and get the most out of your time as an apprentice. Taking ownership of your apprenticeship program will help keep you moving through the levels, building confidence as you go. With every step, you’re earning the right to one day call yourself journeyperson. Start building your future!

On-The-Job Training is 80 per cent of your apprenticeship. Your employer will have assigned a journeyperson or designated trainer to work with you. This is the first step of your training for each level. The number of hours you require for each level is outlined in the trade profile for your specific trade.

Technical training, in the classroom, is a vital part of your apprenticeship. It makes up about 20 per cent of your program and helps to reinforce and expand on what is learned on the job. You complete one technical training session per level of your trade. Most technical training sessions are between four and 12 weeks long and take place at the location of a recognized technical training provider. You are tested on the knowledge you have learned throughout your technical training and must get at least 70 per cent on all tests throughout the session to pass. It is recommended that you work at least half of the required hours for a level (or about six months) before you register for technical training. Typically, you should take technical training once per year, but some apprentices take more time, which is allowed.

Need Help?

  • As apprentices are off the job while attending technical training, you may qualify for financial support (Employment Insurance).
  • Eligible apprentices may also get help with lodging, commuting, busing, child care and more.
  • If you have a disability or need support during technical training, contact your technical training provider at least six weeks before your start date.

  • Employer Consent

Ensure your employer agrees to release you from work for the dates of your training.

I am a foreign worker in the construction sector with a work-permit.

    • The Government of Canada has introduced a temporary measure to allow foreign apprentices in the construction sector to complete their studies without a study permit. This allows for apprentices in certain residential construction trades to participate in technical training while on a work permit and address the current labour market needs in the construction sector. Technical Training Provider Supports

Some apprentices may find technical training challenging for a variety of reasons. Your technical training provider has supports for students enrolled in their courses. Supports are outlined on their websites, and you can also ask your instructor for help.

Technical Training Accomodations Requests

If you need special accommodation during technical training, you will need to make arrangements with your technical training provider.

Apprentices take a break from their paid job in order to take technical training. To help with the loss of income, financial supports may be available. Getting support with family, housing, or more helps you focus on your training and developing your career.

Financial supports from the Government of Canada include:

Financial Supports from Apprenticeship Manitoba

The Manitoba government subsidizes technical training so that tuition fees are affordable.

In addition, you can apply for the following financial supports while taking technical training. After registering and paying the personal contribution fee, you will receive an email approximately six weeks before your start date with details about available supports and how to apply. Intake forms are not available online.

It can take time to process financial support requests, so plan to pay for all expenses up front in case of a delay or denial of your funding request.

Lodging – when attending technical training more than 50 kilometres from home

Lodging means the place where you will live during technical training (this could include a home, apartment, hotel, campground, etc.). You may be eligible for lodging support if you have to pay (rent or mortgage) for both a primary residence and a secondary residence while in training. Your technical training location must be at least 50 km from your home. You must provide proof of temporary lodging before the last day of technical training.

This temporary expense may be covered to a maximum of:

    • $250 bi-weekly in southern Manitoba
    • $340 bi-weekly in northern Manitoba

Note: This support cannot be combined with the daily commuting benefit

While completing the application, you must provide proof of your temporary residence. For example, a photo or scan of receipts or rental agreements, which clearly show:

    • apprentice’s name
    • temporary address
    • dates residing in this residence (from (start date) MM/DD/YYYY until (end date) MM/DD/YYYY))
    • amount paid and for what duration (per month or biweekly, etc.)
    • owner’s name and contact information
  • + -

Travel – one-time payment for relocation during technical training

Travel support may be paid to apprentices who travel more than 50 km from home to stay in the city while attending technical training. This support covers costs only for travel at the beginning and end of the course. Reimbursement for other kinds of travel may be considered if more practical or less expensive.

You may qualify for a one-time lump sum payment based on the following rates:

    • 15 cents per km in southern Manitoba
    • 17 cents per km in northern Manitoba
    • Note: this support can be combined with lodging support
  • + -

Commuting – for daily travel from home to technical training

Commuting support may be paid to apprentices who travel daily from outside the city to their training location. Commuting within a city will not be reimbursed.

Commuting is reimbursed based on the following rates:

    • 15 cents per km southern Manitoba
    • 17 cents per km in northern Manitoba
    • Maximum bi-weekly rate of $250
    • Kilometres are calculated from home to the city limit (not the distance from the city limits to the school)
  • + -

Child care – for apprentices that rely on child care while in technical training

If you already receive child-care subsidies from federal or provincial programs, you are not eligible for this support. This support is for apprentices with a child or children in daycare during technical training. The child-care provider must complete the Childcare Information Form and submit it to Apprenticeship Manitoba.

    Maximum amounts paid are:

    • 1st child $10.00 per day
    • 2nd child $10.00 per day
    • 3rd child $5.00 per day

  • + -

Bridging Funds – for apprentices whose Employment Insurance has run out

There may be rare cases where an apprentice has exhausted their Employment Insurance claim during technical training. Apprenticeship Manitoba may provide funds to bridge the gap until the apprentice has completed technical training. These claims are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

    An apprentice must:

    • provide proof that their Employment Insurance claim is exhausted
    • provide proof of the Employment Insurance rate of pay
    • begin a request by emailing: AM_Support_Services@gov.mb.ca
    • request support before the last day of technical training

Apprentice wages are prescribed by the Apprenticeship and Certification – General Regulation as well as individual trade regulations.

Apprentices in Manitoba earn a wage that is set higher than the provincial minimum wage to help ensure that the skilled trades industry remains both competitive and desirable. The regulations set the minimum wage for apprentices; however, many employers choose to hire apprentices at a higher wage than the minimum.
