Congratulations! Choosing a trade and starting out on the path to become a journeyperson is a big step. Now, you will first need to find an employer to hire and register you as an apprentice. Only once you have an employer can you go through the steps to apply for your apprenticeship.

Tips to find an employer:
- Ask family and friends if they know of companies hiring apprentices.
- Talk to someone in the trade and ask if they know of any job openings.
- Call, email or visit places you’d like to work at and see if they have an opening.
- Visit job board sites like: Indeed, Kijiji, Government of Canada Job Bank, Monster, LinkedIn, First Peoples Development Inc., Manitoba Start.

Once you’ve found an employer, your next step is to apply for apprenticeship and register your Apprenticeship Agreement with Apprenticeship Manitoba. Make sure to ask your employer any questions you may have about fulfilling apprenticeship requirements. If anything is unclear, reach out to an Apprenticeship Training Coordinator at Apprenticeship Manitoba.

Once you have an employer, you can apply to become an apprentice. Then, you and your employer must sign an Apprenticeship Agreement and register it with Apprenticeship Manitoba.
All apprenticeships are managed through the AccessManitoba web portal. This portal is used by apprentices and employers to register the Apprenticeship Agreement. AccessManitoba is also used for technical training registration and for employers to log on-the-job hours worked by the apprentice.

Create your profile and begin the apprenticeship application in AccessManitoba
- navigate to AccessManitoba
- create a new user profile, OR, log into your existing profile
- navigate to Apprenticeship Application, fill in your information and submit

Apprenticeship Manitoba sends an email confirmation to you
- the email includes an Apprentice Reference Number (or AccessManitoba Number), and an Application Reference Number (or AccessManitoba Reference Number).
- you provide these reference numbers to your employer

Employer logs into AccessManitoba portal and links to your account
- your employer logs into their personal account (or creates a new account)
- your employer navigates to Find Apprenticeship Application
- using the reference numbers you provide, the employer navigates to their portion of the application
- the employer and apprentice are now linked in AccessManitoba

Sign the Apprenticeship Agreement
- Apprenticeship Manitoba sends an email to you with the Apprenticeship Agreement
- you can print out the agreement and sign it, or electronically sign the agreement
- your employer must also sign Part C of the agreement

Provide documentation and register your Apprenticeship Agreement with Apprenticeship Manitoba
Follow instructions on your Apprenticeship Agreement to submit:
- a copy of your education records (post-secondary transcript, or high school diploma, and/or Grade 12 transcripts, GED certificate/ Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC), or equivalent). NOTE: If you do not have Grade 12 or equivalent education, state this in your application.
- documentation for any work or educational experience related to your trade
- the completed Apprenticeship Agreement (must be signed by both you and your employer)
Official Start Date:
Your apprenticeship does not begin, and on-the-job-hours are not eligible, until your Apprenticeship Agreement is registered by Apprenticeship Manitoba. So be sure to work with your employer to complete all information and submit the required documentation.

Steps to Apprenticeship
Now that you know how to get started, see how you, your employer and Apprenticeship Manitoba work together.

Apprentice Responsibilities
Set yourself up for success by taking the lead on your apprenticeship.
Becoming an apprentice means you agree to:
- read and understand the requirements of your apprenticeship
- complete on-the-job hours, technical training hours and exams according to The Apprenticeship and Certification Act and for your specific trade regulation or by-law.
- pay the personal contribution fees towards tuition and other applicable fees (see apprenticeship fees)
- use financial assistance for education and living costs directly related to your apprenticeship training, returning any amount not used for these purposes
- inform Apprenticeship Manitoba by email within 15 days if you change your name, address or employer
- initiate a new Apprenticeship Agreement if you change employers
- track your on-the-job hours and make sure your records agree with your employer’s recorded hours
- ask your employer to report hours to Apprenticeship Manitoba (every six to 12 months)
- abide by the Apprenticeship Code of Conduct found in the Apprenticeship Technical Training Registration Guide and the Apprenticeship Orientation Guide.

The following fees are outlined in the Apprenticeship and Certification Fees Regulation.
AS OF JUNE 3, 2019
There is no charge to register your Apprenticeship Agreement with Apprenticeship Manitoba, complete a practical exam for certification, retake a certification exam as part of the apprenticeship program, or have a Temporary Permit issued.
