Red River College

Foundations in Disability and Community Support

Description:

Foundations in Disability and Community Support is an entry level course for the new employee who requires an introduction and orientation to the field of Disability and Community Support. This program will provide basic skills training and information that new employees require to do their job safely and effectively.

Areas to be addressed include but are not restricted to: communication; planning and programming; health and safety issues; documentation; and a variety of areas viewed as essential by employers. Students will recognize the value in providing services that are value based, respectful of individuals and their rights, and consistent with the Vulnerable Persons Living with a Mental Disability Act (VPA) in Manitoba. Students will also gain basic knowledge and understanding of the overall service delivery system and the role they will play within the organization.

Note:  This course may count as a credit towards the Red River College Disability and Community Support Certificate.

Additional course information is available through the regional Red River College campus or on the Red River College website.

Family Services and Labour sponsors the tuition for employees of agencies funded by the Community Living disABILITY Services Program. Registration forms must be signed by a supervisor/manager in your agency. 

Agency management is advised to contact the Red River College campus or regional centre in their area for details on upcoming courses.  Family Services and Labour may also notify agencies of training availability and the registration process.

Publications:

Resource and reading materials will be required for the course.
