Municipal taxes vary by community and prospective business owners should contact individual municipal administrations for details on municipal taxes that apply within a specific community. In Winnipeg, the two principal municipal taxes collected are:
-
Property Tax – The general level of property tax is set out in the annual civic budget. The tax burden is then allocated to property owners based on the assessed value of their properties. Property assessment is conducted every four years, and the next General Assessment will take place in 2010. For the year 2007, Winnipeg’s general municipal property tax rate is 2.5448% (25.448 Mills).
- Business Tax & Business Improvement Zone Levies – The business tax rate is applied based on an assessment of the annual rental value of the business premises, which considers a number of factors, including the size and class of the premises, location, and certain occupancy costs.
If applicable, a Business Improvement Zone (BIZ) levy is also applied against the annual rental value.
For 2007, the Winnipeg business tax rates and BIZ levy rates are as follows:
Business Tax Rates:
- Downtown premises 7.75%
- Other premises 7.75%
