Manitoba residents receive medically required physician care and hospital care at no charge. Manitoba also has a pharmaceutical reimbursement program (Pharmacare) that contributes to costs above a basic deductible that are incurred by an individual or family for eligible prescription drugs.
The above programs are administered by Manitoba Health. The department allocates funding and develops quality operational standards for the province’s hospitals, clinics and personal care homes. Operational management of health care institutions and emergency medical services is provided by a network of eleven Regional Health Authorities.
Manitoba Health also oversees a number of other comprehensive programs and services with respect to Public Health and Mental Health.
Manitoba is served by 80 hospitals and health centres. Since 1999, Manitoba has invested more than $1.1 billion in health capital projects and state of the art diagnostic equipment, including:
- a $135 million redevelopment of Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre, the largest redevelopment of a health facility in Manitoba’s history;
- a $30 million centre of excellence for cardiac care at St. Boniface General Hospital
- a $58 million redevelopment of the Brandon Regional Health Centre;
- expansion and modernization of more than 65 health-care facilities across the province
Additionally, Manitoba has a Telehealth Network that allows patients in 37 communities in northern and rural Manitoba to access clinical specialists in Winnipeg through live video and audio feed.
